The Employment Equity Committee visited the Lokololah Community Crèche and Pre-school in Ivory Park - Midrand which is run by Gabisele. She cares for 178 babies and children up to the age of nine. Their parents are unemployed and these children are the poorest in the area. 

The crèche relies on donations from the community and small businesses, but unfortunately there is still not enough money to pay Gabisele or any of her teachers.

The administrative and school work is done on used paper which has been donated to them. There are no desks, chairs nor flushing toilets. The humble school building is a construction of masonite and corrugated iron - without electricity.

The younger children have their afternoon naps on the cement floors. (Two of the nine classrooms don't even have cement floors) When things need to be built or repaired, Gabisele does it herself. She doesn't expect the teachers to do it as they aren't paid. 

There have been times when there hasn't been any food to give to the children. It's a struggle and it has been hard for everybody. Gabisle can only survive because her husband works. 

So what drives this determined woman? 

"I love children", she says. "There is nothing sadder than seeing little children suffer or go hungry. It's even worse when they can't get an education because there is no money at home."
The Lokolola Crèche is not asking for much but just small donations to give these Children a better future.

September 2002
The committee donated 20 mattresses and 150 kg of maize meal.

December 2002
After collecting R6000 from the different teams in the company, the committee decided to donate a long lasting, educational jungle gym to the children of the Lokoloha Creche.

January 2003
The committee donated 125 Kg of Mealie Meal, 100 Kg of Porridge, 20 Kg of biscuits, 5 Kg of Powdered Milk and 40 Kg of Jam to the value of R1500.
